In January 2025, as severe wildfire destruction has unfolded in the Los Angeles area, 180,000 people have had to evacuate their homes, more than 10,000 structures have been destroyed, and at least 28 people have died. Many UAW members in the area have been evacuated or spent multiple days without power, and several have reported losing their homes and nearly all of their belongings.
Unfortunately, UAW members and our communities are not new to climate disasters, which have only been growing more frequent and severe thanks to decades of billionaires prioritizing their own profits over the needs of working people and the livability of the planet. This week’s disaster in Southern California is a poignant illustration of the dire consequences that system of corporate greed has – and will continue having – on working people. That’s why members across Region 6 are in an ongoing fight to advance a just and sustainable future for all working people. As one small but impactful part of that work, please consider making a contribution to the hardship fund – an injury to one is an injury to all.
In addition to the hardship fund, UAW members in Southern California are continuing to organize a network of resources and volunteers to support fellow members impacted by the ongoing disaster. If you need to evacuate, can host evacuees, or can otherwise offer assistance or materials for fellow members, please fill out this form.
